5 Minutes with Bob Davis

This 5 Minutes with Bob Davis article appeared in the News-Journal,  By Ashley Varese

Bob Davis, president and CEO of the Lodging & Hospitality association of Volusia County, has been a fixture on the Daytona tourism scene for more than 50 years. A strong proponent of education, he serves on the Daytona State College Board of Trustees and created an adopt-a-school program in which hospitality association members donate supplies to local schools as well as offer programs and mentors.

We recently asked Davis to give us a quick glimpse into his daily life.

What's the one thing you can't start your day without?

Singing a song. For my entire life, when I get up in the morning, there's a radio turned on in my head and it plays a song. Nothing I heard the night before. It starts my day and puts a smile on my ugly kisser.

What was this morning's song?

I think it was "Sweet Sixteen" or one of those '50s rock songs.

What's the one thing you need to get through the work day?

I don't "get through" a work day. I love the day. I embrace it. I'm up at 4 a.m., sometimes by 3:30. This morning I was at my desk at 4:30 just ready to chase the day, see what's on the horizon. Today I gave 100 (donated) cellphones to battered women that they can change over and use to call

9-1-1. This is my 26th year of doing that.

What advice would you give your future self?

Good question. Pursue your dream. go for it, and if you don't attain it, you would have least attempted to. And be happy and smileeveryday. Let me share some wisdom from the Hebrew bible: "Treat everyone at the marketplace as you would like to be treated." In the old days, people shopped in the market place, whether they had a cow or needed milk. You should treat others the way you'd like to be treated.
